Food For The Planet
Newcastle upon Tyne

5600.86 tonnes of CO2 saved per year

Using the Food for the Planet resources, Food Newcastle aim to influence local organisations and residents to move towards more planet-friendly choices. We will encourage catering outlets (including both public & voluntary sectors) to make ‘Planet Pledges’, including more plant-focused meals, higher welfare meat & dairy and wasting less food, to make sustainable food more accessible to local people.

Using the #reduceredirectrecycle hashtag, we plan to use social media to raise awareness of commitments organisations make, and to encourage individuals to make similar commitments. Including #reduce meat and dairy consumption, #redirect shopping to use more local suppliers and #recycle surplus food.

We see the Newcastle campaign helping tackle the climate and nature emergency, through taking food-related actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Using the Every Mouthful Counts toolkit, the following actions would commit to an estimated reduction in carbon;

- Serving more climate friendly meals focusing on reducing meat consumption and increased plantbased options, saving 0.5kg GHG emissions per meal per year

- Running food waste awareness campaign and providing support for surplus food redistribution, saving 4.00kg GHG emissions per kg of food waste reduced per year
